Easy, doable mindfulness activities.

One day I was watching a little girl from my group become increasingly frustrated with a toy that she was trying to use and with another child who kept knocking down her attempts at trying to build a tower. I was about to step in, when I observed this little girl put up her two candle fingers and start blowing out her candles. This is what teaching yoga and breathing is all about.

I find that yoga and mindfulness is also a great transition when coming from outside, back into a more structured learning environment.

I needed to learn- how do I teach mindfulness? These cards are a wonderful resource!

Children at the age 3-5 are open sponges to learn a new skill a new language and learn how to function in the world, they just need to be taught. With awareness of these fun mindfulness techniques children can learn to be aware of what is going on around them and learn to react with a mindful mind.

We also see a great deal of anxiety in schools today. These children also have difficulty focusing and performing in school because their mind is going to scary places and they don’t have the “brain muscles” to direct it to a safer, more productive place. In schools, teachers tell children to “focus” all the time. What does that mean? And we have many children who become frustrated/depressed because they can’t just do whatever it is that the teacher is yelling at them to do. They can’t keep their body quiet. Mindfulness can help these children—without even knowing they are learning to do these things!
